BAYANIHAN CLINIC VOLUNTEERS

DR. LUZ D. GUERRERO
Medical Director

Board Certified in Internal Medicine, The Permanente Medical Group (Lincoln and Roseville)
Fellow, American College of Physicians
Medical Director of the "Bayanihan Clinic"
Associate Medical Director of "Health for All"

I was recruited to volunteer at Bayanihan Clinic by former preceptor, Dr. Aloysius Llaguno, in 2003. Due to my passion for community service, I came to clinic nearly every Saturday to teach undergrads and medical students while providing free healthcare to the underserved Filipino veterans, including their spouses. I was then nominated and elected as Medical Director during the first annual clinic banquet. It was a difficult and very challenging task to provide primary care to patients with limited resources. The creativity and innovative ideas of the volunteers led us to host various fundraisers (such as the previous annual golf tournaments held for many years) and others. Hence, we were able to enhance the services we provide.

Until I became part of this clinic, I did not realize the need and impact of a free clinic. Working with the student volunteers inspired me to pursue bigger and greater goals. We have obtained a larger clinic space, increased the physician recruitment, continued outreach, and enhanced our peer, patient and volunteer education as well as learning experience.

We have also spearheaded the development of EMR (electronic medical records) and are currently in the process of fully transitioning to this system.

Today, the clinic serves a diverse population aside from the FIlipino WWII veterans, to whom the clinic was originally founded for. I hope that the Bayanihan legacy remains forever and continues its mission to provide free healthcare to the underserved.

Bayanihan Clinic is a community service organization that thrives by the support and dedication of the undergraduate and health professional (medical, PA, NP) students of the University of California, Davis.

Every clinic gives the opportunity for students to practice their clinical skills, including:

  • history taking
  • physical examination
  • delivering assessment and plan
  • chronic care management

We invite you to learn more and sign up on the interclinic website.
